LAMBING DOWN.
In anot her colony there have been some legal proceedings by a boundary rider against a publican. A newspaper corres pondent described the affair as a case of "lambing down," which aggrieved thp publican, who (somewhat rashly) unbosompd himself in print. He objected altogether to this newspaper correspondent because " publicans never get, nor are likely to get, much of his money ;" and yet a few lines further on this abstemious reporter—this rara avis amongst pressmen __j s styled "a maudlin scribbler." Now, I have been myself regaled with •' vigorine," l?ut, despite vigorous efforts, I signally failed to. achieve any definite regall beyond the physical consequence of fullness and expansion. Coming to another Stage, the indignant tavern-keeper quotes the words of the " brainless nincompoop " who informs the newspapers from atar, and he shows the sroundreiism of the press man in that be over-estimated the lamb-Bg-down to the reprehensible extent of £7 6s 6d. This is what the aggrieved publican himself says:—" It will be seen on reference to this precious paragraph in hh csrrespondence, that it contains the follow ing sentence—* It appears from the evidence that G. • lambed down ' the plaintiff to the extent of about £48 the first four days and £21 the next four.' Now I believe this to be a wilful mis>statement on the part of your correspondent, as the figures mentioned by him amount to £69, whereas the man's cheque actually amounted to £61 13s 6d." The correspondent who would vilify a professional whisky-seller to the amount of £7 6s. 6d. deserves— well now, I really think he deserves the thanks of the whole community.— JEgles.
