AUCKLAND.
This day. Fatal Drowning Accident. Powell, a boarding house keeper, with two children, aged 8 and 6 years, and a man named Daniels, were coming to town from Lucas' creek this morning* in an open boat, and when off Kauri Point a squall struck the boat and capsized, Powell by seizing an oar managed to swim ashore. Daniels and the children were drowned.
The dead body of a man about 40 years of age was found under Queen street wharf to day. It had apparently been a fortnight in the water unrecognised. H. Moody, a draper's assistant has been arrested for stealing £30 worth of drapery from the Melbourne Clothing Company, where he had been employed. The WhaleTsoat PrizeThe Auckland Regatta Committee has resolved to give £100 prize and the Union Company's Challenge Cup, valued £25, for the whaleboat race on the 29th of January, if ten entries are obtained. The first prize in the schooner race has been reduced to £75.
