The military armaments of New Zealand (Bays a London correspondent, writing on October 3rd) are growing apace, a purchase having just been effected for the G-overnment of a battery of nine pounders, six pieces of field artillery in all, from the War Office in London. The guns are, of oourae, not of (he most modern type, but for all practical purposes quite as serviceable as if thiy were, the alterations and improvements necessitated by the requirements of modern progress being not always of particularly much practical importance. They are of an excellent class and pattern, aad have been got very cheap.

Sa?S the Herald, speaking of the Agricultural Show :—Mr Mil'er, Thames, exhibits the model of a threshing machine by which the weight and walkiDg power of horaes arc utilised as a motor for driting the threshing machine. This is a new adaptation of the principle which was long ago used for pumping operat'ons. Mr Miller states that by the form of inclined plane on which the horsss walk at three miles an hour he could obtain a speed of the beating drum of 2000 revolutions per minute. The design shows that a good deal of painstaking care has been l-estowed upon its preparation. If adapted for the Dctual wok of threshing machines, Mr Miller should have no difficulty in also applying it to the reduction of quartz at the Thames.
