PARAWAI WARD.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—l saw a letter in Monday night's issue of the Stab complaining of the power held by three Borough Councillors, and after carefully perusing it I wondered what sort of material men holding such peculiar situations were made of. I hare long revered old institutions, and in every country —many though they have been— in which I have wandered, I have never seen such representation as that existent in connection with the Parawai Ward. I have asked myself why is this permitted? Can it be for a purpose ? WbeDce this anomaly ? and all sorts of queries radiating from the station as it is, but there seems to be no reply. There is one question remaining to be answered, viz.: Do not the present holders of office as Conn* cillors for the Parawai Ward feel themselves occupying a somewhat ignominious position. It may be a great, grand, and glorious gratification to have, as a representative, the interests of three and a half people to attend to, and then to belong to a party, but I question whether it is not somewhat subversive of good government —even local government—to see three men, although they be devoted and pafcsis otic, attached only to the thirteen acres electing them, and perfectly independent and incorruptible, throwing away their talents on so small an area. Sir, this must not, nay, it cannot, be for long.—l am, &c, Gbey Street.
