In a race between the steamers Clansman (Northern 8.8. Co.'s new steamer), Wellington, and Waitaki, from Waiwera to Auckland, the two former finished first, a dead heat, beating the Waitaki by two miles in the twenty-four. The speed attained was 12 miles an hour.
Mr Vollbracht has resigned the management of the New Zealand Tobacco Company, which is shortly to be amalgamated with the Auckland Tobacco Co.
Mr Montgomery left for England by the mail steamer yesterday.
The Auckland Parliamentary Union has passed by a large majority, a land bill in the direction of land nationalisation.
