AUCKLAND.
This day. Mr J. C. Firth has wired to the manager of the N.Z. Shipping Company, the following:--" Great discontent here about no direct steamers coming to Auckland; it looks like growing into a combination to suip exclusively by other routes. The Committee of the Chamber of Commerce meet to day to consider action re direct steamers recently taken. I hope you will at once check the rising movement by
ac'ing promptly and liberally." Mr Coster replied : —The directors are prepared to see a fair proportion of steamers come to Auckland, and arrangement will be made accordingly."
The anniversary of the battle of Inkerman was celebrated by a dinner last night.
A fire at Parnell this morning destroyed some stables belonging to Mr Hodgson ; they were insured for £100 in the Imperial.
