COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following business was transacted at yesterday's meeting after our report closed :—

COBBESPONDENCE.

The solicitor advised that the claim of W. Good, of Tapu, for compensation, be contested. The Ohincmuri Vigilance Committee asked for an investigation as to the manner in which contracts in Ohinemuri were carried out. —The Chairman considered the existence of the committee an insult to the Council.—lt was resolved not to recognise the committee's existence, but to investigate any specific charge made by a ratepayer. A complaint from F. Strange and other settlers of Waitoa, that R. Parr was about to close a road to their properties, was referred to the Engineer and Chairman. In reply to a letter from W. Greenville re the Cemetery road, it was resolved on the motion of Crs Murdoch and Thorburn, " That the Council concurs with Mr Greenville with regard to the disgraceful state of the road; that the Borough Council be asked to contribute its proportion of the money for its formation; that the Parawai Highway District having now been merged, into the County, steps be immediately taken to have the road maue uuu w <2 _ .«n Ott< i a fln d Bridges Construction Act." The Chairman and Engineer were requested to report on a petition from 14 Omahu settlers, asking assistance in forming a branch road to the Thames river. It was agreed, in reply to a request from the Queen of Beauty mine, that a valve be put in the'pipes below the pump, at a cost of £40, on the payment of water charges due. J. Morrison objected to S. McCormick's taking County tenders, he being under age.—Referred to solicitor for opinion. In reference to T. A. Dunlop's complaint that the overflow of the water race caused him considerable trouble and expense, the Engineer said he had directed tnat the water should not be turned down again if it could be avoided. The following matters were referred to the Board of Works:—A request from J. Goonan. on behalf of the Hidden Treasure and Martha claims, Karangahake, for assistance in the formation of a branch road.—Letter from Carroll Nash, asking that the line of the Tauranga road through his paddocks be fenced.—P. E. Cheal's letter stating that Mr Lavery would not object to the branch road from the PukePaeroa road to the river passing through nis property, if it was properly fenced. The .Finance Committee were requested to attend to—A letter from the N.Z. Bank manager, asking that the overdraft be reouced within three months.—Claims from J. Blain and Mr Dearie, for services in connection with the sale of an interest in the Parereka No. 2 blook, from which the County obtained revenue.

OTHEE BUSINESS. The Chairman moved " That ifc is undesirable for any officer of the Council to interfere in any way with the action of the Returning Officers in conducting the elections, either in the matter of advertising or any other duty devolving upon them. He had taken this course because a slur had been cast upon the Council for supposed interference with Mr Gibson when he was preparing the roll.—CrDeeble seconded.—Mr Hollis said he had given no instruction other than the letter deo.ded on by the Finance Committee, to the effect that advertisments should be set close.—Motion carried. mF r, h°r.burn m°™d •' That Mr Allom (Uerk to .licensing Committee) be allowed a sum of £5 per annum, payment to be retrospective." Mr Allom desemd a salary, as a large amount of work was involved in the appointment.—After the motion had been altered to provide for the payment of a lump sum of £15 it wai carried, an amendment by Crs Deeble and Bull, to make an annual payment of £5 in. future, being lost. Cr Thorburn, who withdraws from the Council after eight years membership, thanked the members and officers 6£ the Council for the courtesy shows him, and the Council then rose.
