(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
SiE,~Will you allow me space in jonr valuable and liberal jouraal to make a few remarks on the letter in your issue of Saturday, the Ist, signed "Uncle John." It, is not my intention to abase any man who may differ from me in religious belief. I take the Old and New Testaments as my guide, and as I see so many who profess Christianity say they believe the Scriptures to be the word of God and contain the truth that every man should be guided by, but which follow the doctrine and commandments of men, I am not surprised to meet with sceptics on the Thames. My desire is that the reader will compare, without prejudice, my remarks and the remarks in the letter by " Uncle John." In the Scripture is written, " The seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God ; remember to keep it holy." This was a command of God through Moses, and we find it was the seventh day (not the first or any other day) that was kept as the Sabbath by the prophets. Jesus, and the Apostles up to some 300 years after Christ. Did not Christ say, " If ye believe not Moaes' writings how shall ye believe my words." Christ kept the law of Moses, and ever taught obedience to the same ; Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, tells them they should turn from vanities unto the living God, and not give heed to commandments of men that turn from the truth. He says again the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears, aidl they shall turn their ears from the truth,'* and shall be turned unto fables. I am bold to aay thai professing Christians cannot find a single passage that any other than tae seventh day is the Sabbath of jS a ?} xt} hose Professors have chosen the fcabbath of Constantino the Great, which is the first day which he enforced upon the people by the Gentile law. So it is clear to my mind that he is b-od of the Gentiles, and they crucified Jesus, and want to clear themselves by saying it was the Jews. I say if it were the Jews it would make the words of Ohnst false, as written by the evangelists m the Gospel. My letter would be too long, if not so already, were I to qaote. proofs almost innumerable to confirm my assertions.—l am, &c, . Vesitt.
