By the Eotomahana this morning the local Bank of New Zealand shipped for Auckland five boxes containing 50370zs 15dwts gold. This is the accumulation of leß3 than a month, the previous shipmtnL having been made on September 17th.
-At the Police Court this morning, before H. Ken rick, Esq., Wm..J3>atb, alias Cussac, alias Quick, was charged with having been drunk in G-roy street yesterday. The evidence of Sergt. Murphy wob heard, and this being the accused's spcond offence within a fortnight he was fined 20s, or in default 48 hoars' imprisonment.
At the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening Mr E. H. Taylor will lecture on " The creation of man." Tho Esr. J. A. Taylor will preach special sermons in connection with the Home Mission in the Wesleyan churches, and a public meeting will be held in Short-land on Monday evening.
The ice-making machine purchased by Messrß Payne and Shepherd, fishermen, of Shortland, from Ingam and Co. of Auckland, has fust been put in good working order by Mr Crawford, and the first lot of ice, of excellent quality, was mado last evening. The proprietors will now make ice at regular interval?,.in order to preserve their fish, and will of course be able to supply tho cooling substance to any who wish to purchase. We hail the establishment of tbis new industry in our midst with satisfaction, and wish the enterprising proprietors every success.
A case of some local interest was oalled on in Auckland yesterday, when Wra. J. Suiter, brewer, was charged with supplying E. Twohill with two casks of beer, such casks bearing the brand of J. Speight, Dunedin. Mr Williamson, C'own Prosecutor, appeared for the Collector of Customs, and Mr Cotter for the defendant- After hearing the evidence of Messrs Twohill, I£. F. Tizard, and others the case was dismissed on grounds. The defence was that the beer had been placed in the barrels by mistake, and that Mr Twohill had been informed of the fact.
The Kirikiri Cricket Club have appointed the following officers for the eneuing year : — W. H. Taipari, president; R. Whakarongotai, vice-president; R. Dovell, captain; Hbri Matene, secretary and treasurer; with Tamaki, Anderson, Watene, Murray, Totaea, Tupara, and Rota as committee men. The opening match, Married v. Single, was to be played this afternoon.
The seventh competition for tho Naval Brigade prizes took place to-day, but owing to the rough weather very few fired. The morn* irq scores were—Weir, 74; Johns, 65. Me Nancabbow, Marine Boiler Inspector, will be at the Tnames next Saturday on his half-yearly visit. A young scamp about 17 years of age appeared before Mr Kenrick this morning, charged with striking his molher; He denied having done so intentionally, bui, admitted that in a scuffle with his father be did bo accidentally. He received a lecture from the Bench, and the case was remanded for 14 days, id order to enable him to get work ; he waaadvised to support himself, and not return home, as he did not, apparently know how to conduct j himself there.
A eepobt has been current in Paeroa for the last day or two of a new find of gold at Hikutiiia, but we have no more information than the report giveß.—Tribune. Akothee largo fire occurred at 'nvercsirgill yeeterday, when seven wooden shops were burnt. The total insurances were £2770. ' The N.Z. Shipping Go. have received a cable, dated London October 9, that the b.b. Tongariro arrived (all well) at Plymouth that duy; actual steaming time 38 days 10 hours. Owara and ilakaia have sailed. At the last meeting of tho Auckland Crown Lands Board, a letter was read from the Warden, Thames, in reference to taking legal proceedings against offenders for illegally cutting down timber on Crown Lands. The matter was referred to the Crown Lands ranger.
The Hauralu Tribune is jubilant over the failure of the County 0 uneil to get the Ohinemuri Revenue Bill pasßed, and thus givea vent to its feelings on the subject:—" 80 that we may hope that this shameless attempt to defraud James Maekay's creditors is at an end for the presenfc. It is Baid that the evidence of Mr Gh T. Wilkinson is to be taken on this malter; if co, he is the right man, aa he read the deed by which the Government undertook to pay £15,000 of native debts out of this money, seven times in oni day ! IVL.' Wilkinson was then acting as native interpreter to Sir Donald MoL?an, the Native Minister, and he witnessed the payment of the borrowed halfsovereign—all the money the Government p*id on the transaction. Within the past ten days sis vessels have left Read and Co's mills at the Junction and Kirikiri for Auckland, taking away altogether about 110,000 feet of sawn timber, about half of which was kabikatea and the remainder kauri.
Ik connection with the question of the division of the Government grant for prize firing, Mr Stevens, secretary to the Rifle Association, has written to the President to the following effect, and the letter has been forwarded to the Minister of Defence :—The colony is split up into three divisions, viz, the North (Auckland, Thames, &c.) want the money divided into prizes for each district; Middle (Taranaki, Wanganui, Napier, Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland) are in favor of only one vote; South (Canterbury, Otago, and Southland) want the money divided. Figures show that for the six years the Association has been in existence the attendance has been: —North Division : Total number, 205 j average yearly, 34. Middle Division: Total, 533 j average, 37. , South Division : Total, 294; average, 49.
