This day.
A large room in the upper part of McFarlane'a grocery. McLaggan street, occupied by Peter JJankin, tailor, was completely gutted, and tfco roof of the whole buildiug injured. £300 will cover the damage. The building is insured for £3000, and ihe stock for £6000. The stock is slightly damaged by water. Eankin's fittings were insured for £50.—A fourroomed bouse at Kaikoura, occupied by Wm. Miller, has also been burned down.
Land Dummyism. In Higgins v. the Land Board, an appeal from a decision of the Board in forfeiting the appellants' license on the ground of dummyism. Judge Williams, in giving judgment, oaid the license was not liable to be forfeited, on the ground that the licensee had occupied land not exclusively for his own use and benefit, although if it were liable to be forfeited on this ground he was quite satisfied that the evidence would justify a forfeiture. The appeal was allowed with costs.
