AUCKLAND.
This day. The City Market was leased by auction today for one year, at £90 per month. A curious will case came before the Supreme Court yesterday. It was brought up first in Chambers, when His Honor directed a mode of trial, appointing the Public Trustee as defendant. In August last Herbert, who had been an inmate of the Lunatic Asylum, died in the institution, but four days before his death he made a will in favor of his daughter. It transpired that Herbert and his reputed wife tiad lived together as man and wife for 30 years, and she had always been recognised by Herbert and the public as his wife, although they had never been legally married. Herbert had no relatives in New Zealand besides the reputed wife and her daughter, but of course they could not legally inherit his property; unless by will. From the evidence, however, it appeared that for about a month prior to death Herbert had recovered his sanuy, and was quite conscious of his acts and the.result of them. After hearing the evidence, which was quite conclusive on this head, His Honor granted probate to the will. The Chamber of Commerce yesterday decided to summon a mass public meeting to protest against the recommendation of the Railway .Route Committee as prejudicial to the interests of Auckland. Anderson, who was arrested on Monday at Otaki, on the charge of embezzle* ment at Liverpool, could scarcely have escaped the New Zealand police authorities long. Detective Walker succeeded in discovering that Anderson^ had a brother in Auckland, and also that accused was at Otaki. A telegram from the Auckland Police Department to Wellington, announcing these discoveries, actually crossed on Monday last with one from Wellington, notifying the police here of Anderson's arrest 1
