A XKLEQBAM received by ua to-day from Wellington states that the Central route is likely to ba recommended by the Seleofc Committee as that to be taken by the North Main Trunk Line of Bailway. The Shortland Fire Brigade announce elsewhere that their annual concept and dance will take place in the Academy of Music tomorrow night. We are informed that an excellent programme has been arranged, and a new local song by Mr Wiseman, on the Spencer water rights question will form one of the items. Mb WiiTiMOTt's favorite comedy and dramatic company will occupy the boards at the Academy of Music this evening, when Sims' great comedy of " Crutch' and Toothpick," with a most amusing farce as an afterpiece, will be presented. The bill is a good one, and "those who patronise the company may count upon a pleaeant evening's entertainment. On Friday night Miss Lawrence will take a benefit, and the announcement that " The Octoroon," which drama has been selected for the occasion, will be staged should draw a bumper house.
A VERY successful quadrille p3rty was held in St. Qceorge'a Schoolroom last night, about 30 couples being present; The hall was tastefully decorated with flags, evergreens, fljwersj &c, and presented a very pretty appearance. Dancing was kept up with spirit until 11.30, when an adjournment for supper took place, after which Mr Jas. Paterson, on behalf of the committee—Messrs Nemos, Paiewon, and Gtreenslade —and other members of the class presented Mr J. Rae with a handsome gold ring, with his initials engraved thereon, and in doing bo said he trusted Mr Rae would accept it as a slight token of their esteem and regard for him, and that he would live long to wear it. The recipient briefly returned thanks for the gift, saying that he would wear it con* stantly, and when seeing it he could not forget the many pleaßant evenings they had spent together. Dancing was then resumed, and kept up till an early hour this morning.
CoMPIrAitfTS bare been made during the past few days of the vagariesof a youth who has been annoying residents about the Xauae* ranga Valley, in the vicinity of the Orphanage ; these complaints resulted in the arrest to-day, by Constable Stapleton, of a young man named James Lamb, aged about 19 years, on the charge of being a lunatic not under proper control. The unfortunate fellow seems to hare a craze for mathematics and maohinery, mixed with that ingredient iv many cases of madness—love. He will be examined by two medical men, and brought before the Eesident Magistrate in due course.
Steps are be taken to form a Dramatic Club on the Thames, and definite arrangements will probably be made shortly.
The Australian Diamond Mining Company at Bingera washed out 279 loads of dirt and got 920 diamonds. At the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, Rosina E. Smith found guilty of manslaughter, was sentenced to six months' hard labour. The prisoner swooned -when sentence was passed. The steamer Triumph was floated out of the Auckland dock yesterday. A PBIZB fight for £10 a side is reported to have been fought on a recent Sunday in a paddock bs Helensville between, two men named Byan and Hunt. Both pugilists were suvhtlj iijure*, the fight lasting over an hour wiibxui interference from the spectators. .At the usual monthly meeting of the Harbor Board, held at four o'clock yesterday afternoon, there were present Messrs Read (in the Chair), Bagnall, Bull, Carpenter, Mo* Gowan, Price, and Wilson. In reference to the question of tbe back rent of the Customs Houee site, the Commissioner of the Department wrote that it could nave? have been intended to give the Board power to rate the Customs House site ; he would recommend the Government to resume possession of the land. It was ordered that Mr Rowe be informed that though the Board could not give a title to the foreshore allotment in question without passing a special Act, they would not obstruct any private measure he might introduce to obtain his title. No concession of toll charges was granted to the railway contractors for gravel carted from the Waiotahi aqueduct. Ec the Harbormaster's report (pnblished yesterday) it was decided to take the dredge machinery ashore and to anchor the punts in the Puriri creek j nothing was done in regard to the other recommendationa. The Secretary reported that the overdraft itood at £1195, with £134 of unpaid accounts outstanding. The September accounts, to the amount of £63, were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
Anotheb freak of nature has been discovered among the trout now being reared in Burke street, in the chape of a second doubleheaded fish. Fish No. 2 (or rather we suppose he should be called Nos. 3 and 4) is blesßed with two distinct bodies, but only one tail, and it is most amusiug to watch the beads trying to swim in different directions. Both lusus natures have been placed in a globe for the convenience of • visitors. The other fish are progressing healthily, and some of them will be removed to Mr Allom's rearing pond on Saturday.
At the County Council this afternoon a letter was read from Mr. J. M. H. Lush, on behalf of W. Good of Tapu, asking for £50 compensation for injuries sustained and expenses incurred in consequence of his wife sustaining a fracture of her left arm, by being thrown from her horse when the animal put bis foot into a hole on the County road near Puru. He askod a favorable reply by the 9thinefc, otherwise au action would be brought. The letter was referred to the Chairman and County Solicitor to deal with.
Mb J. E. Banks, who was adjudicated a bankrupt over three months ago at the instance of the Walker Gum Company (his principal creditors), was to have attended at the Official Assignee's office in Auckland, yesterday morning, for examination by Mr E. Hoakefch. He failed, however, to attend, and the Assignee is now considering the ad usability of issuing a warrant for his apprehension.
