Anniversary Soiree.
A Tery successful soiree and public meeting, in connection with the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Grahamstown Wesleyan Sunday School, was held last night. Tea was laid out in the schoolroom, and the number present was more than could be accommodated at one sitting. Tbe public meeting, held in the church, was also largely attended. Tbe Key. H» Bull presided, and after singing and prayer, called upon the secretary (Mr J. H. Coad) to read the report and balance sheet. The former stated that Mr Roberts' catechism class was weU attended, and a weekly teachers and scholars prayer meeting was held. There were 189 scholars on the roll —97 of each sex,—being a decrease of 25. The average attendance was 27 in tbe morning, .and 110 in the afternoon. The teachers numbered 23, the senior Bible classes (taught by Mr Parker and Mrs Gssely) continued interesting and instructive. The balance»sheet showed that the total income for the year ending sth 0c tober had been £68 9s 7fd, the expenditure being £63 4s lid, leatiDg a balance of £5 4s B|d. The proceeds of the present anniversary, so far as could be yet ascertained, were.— Sunday's collections, £-15 ss" od; sale of soiree tickets and cash taken at the door, £15 lls 3d ; total, £30 16s Bd. Interesting addresses were then given by the Keys. Woolley, Laishley, Potter, Barley, and Capt. Bowerman (of the Salration Army), the school Superintendent (Mr Cor in) also saying a few Words. The speakers all dwelt chiefly upon Sunday School work, pointing out its importance to the growth of Christianity, tbe great influence for good it exerted, and exhorting teachers to press on steadfastly. During tbe evening the scholars rendered several hymns in, a manner reflecting great credit on Mr A. Vowles, who conducted, and who.trained them. Miss Murray accompanied on tbe harmonium, and Messrs Williams, Moyle, Cook, and Paul on other instruments.
