AUCKLAND.
This day. A two-storey wooden tenement house, occupied by Mr Frith, photographer, and O Bee and Fischer, cabinetmakers, and owned by Mr John Tole, was burnt last evening. The fire was caused by the bursting of a lamp in Mr Friths apartments. Messrs O'Bee and Fischer are insured for £170 in the Colonial.

Tole's building waa insured in the Eoyal, but the manager refuses to state the amount.
The Pacific mail steamer Australia brought 2500 cases of fruit for New Zealand; it i s the largest shipment of American fruit yet made. Mr Griffin, U.S. Consul had a very successful mission to Washington and during his stay there had a consultation with the President and representative of the Steam Company on the subject of a fast mail service "to the colonies. The Pacific Mail Co. have under consideration a project of replacing the present boats with faster ones.
