Wbliingtcn, This day.
The following telegram was sent by the Colonial Secretary to tbe Governments of Victoria and New South Wales :—" You will personally oblige me by causing one of your officials to immediately furnish me as closely as possible with the following information —1. Number of patients still suffering from small-pox in the colony; 2. Number of deaths and recoveries from disease since present outbreak ; 3. As to tbe probability of confining and completely stamping out tbe disease, and the time within which such result is expected." Tbe following replies hate been received:—Victoria : "Number of patients suffering from small-pox is eleven, viz., six in the Sanatorium and five atEingwood, and it is anticipated that after tbe 19th inst., there will be five cases remaining tinder treatment at tbe sanatorium. The number of deaths are two, and it is thought the disease will not spread further. There have been 26 cases treated in the sanatorium since the outbreak on tbe Ist of June last, and besides these there have been 18 cases reported in various localities in Victoria, of which five now remain under surveillance, and the others having recovered. Detailed return by post; no new cases since the 13th inst.—James Sebvice, Premier." From N.S. Wales — " Twelve cases of variola now in the colony; all confined in vigorous quarantine. Several are convalescent, and only two are in a dangerous state. The measures already adopted for prompt isolation are considered very effective, and likely to stamp out the disease, should no fresh centres be created by importation from Victoria. —Alex. Stttabt."
