WHITE VIOLETS. Aib: • ' Belle Mahone." Yes, the vale was fair and lone Where all peacefully had grown Flora's shy and winsome pets, White violets. There, the moss grew rich and green ; Waters flowed with silver sheen, Smiled, 'neafch azure skies serene, White violets. Came a country maiden there, Gathered them with gentle care; Love, their loveliness begets, White violets. To the crowded city sent, Bringing hearts 'mid grey walls pent Messages of sweet content White violets. Children in the world's ways old, By their poverty made bold, Crying till the bright sun sets, "White violets!" Silent is the darkened room, Shrouded for her infant tomb, In the baby's fingers bloom White violets. At the sacred altar rail, Blushing 'neath her snowy veil, Wearing them, the bride forgets White violets! Dying exile racked by pain, Doomed his home ne'er to regain, Clasps this first pledge again, White violets. Pure as Heaven-descended snows, Sweet to every gale that blows In this world of varied frets, White violets. Thus, the cradle, altar, bier, May they hallow, bless, and cheer— Aye, to loving hearts prove dear, White violets.'
