In the first innings of the eleven representatives of the South of England, which closed for a total of 56, the highest scorer was W. G. Grace, with 24 (caught). When the stumps were drawn for the day, the Australians had scored 159 with 9 wickets down, the principal contributors being~Bannerman, c, 35; Giffen, c, 28; Bunnor, o, 27. The attendance at the match was good, and the weather fine, but the wicket heavy owing to the recent rains.
