TROUT REARING.

Sib, —Permit me to trouble you with a few remarks about trout-rearing. The Auckland Acclimatisation Society have liberally supplied us with a much larger number of trout ova than we received last September, and, thanks to the Borough Council we have the seme facilities for batching them as before. We are anxious to utilise the experience we have gained by making better arrangements for the care of the young fry when they reach the age of six or seven weeks. Our operations commenced yesterday by piacirg in the hatching boxes upwards bf five thousand ova in fine condition. About the middle of next month, instead of keepiDg them so long io the hatching boxes, or at once liberating them in the streams to become the prey of-eels, shags, kingfishers, and other enemies, it is very desirable that they should be removed to rearing ponds, where tliey may be carefully nursed for five or six months. They will then be better able to take care of themselves, and one fish will be worth a hundred small fry. We fouuel last year that by keeping the young fish too, loDg in the boxes the mortality, exclusive of accidents, was towards the end of November something like 10 per cent, in fourteen days. If a few persons taking nn intelligent interest in the matter, and desiring to assist us, would form small rearing ponds for themselves during the next month, we could supply them with the youDg fry at the proper time, and either Mr Steedman, Mr K. N. Smith, or my. self, if personally applied to, would be glad to afford all necessary information on the subject.—l am, &c, Albert J. Allom.
