PARLIAMENTARY GOSSIP.

[By Telegraph.] (from oue owjst coebespondent.)

Wellington, This day.

There was a good debate last evening on the second reading of the Mining Districts Amendment Act, in which it is proposed to reduce the miners' right fee to 10g per annum. The amendment was strongly opposed by . the Canterbury squatters, on the ground that if the revenue was taken away, Parliament would be asked to provide something in lieu thereof. Mr Buckland (Franklin South) made some offensive remarks re gold miners, but was fairly set on by the whole of the West. Coast people. Mr Buckland has acquired already the unenviable notoriety of a man of many wards, which will stick to him, and dim his brilliant talent if he does not alter the tone of his* conduct in debate. The goldfield members are making their mark in the House as debaters and practical men, able to hold their own against any equal number df men here. During the debate much amusement was caused when making comparisons between cbawbacon and the intelligent mirier. Col. Fraser made his maiden speech last evening, on the question of Chairman of Committees, He did not say much, but spoke clearly and temperately,- giving the reason for his vote. Messrs Fraser, Morris, and Brodie had an interview with the Premier yesterday ro the claim for goldfield revenue, for which the County petitioned the House last session. The Premier retained the papers for the purpose of making himself acquainted with the subject.
