[Received September 6, 1.30 p.m.! Melbourne, This d ay. Mr Service, Premier, has telegraphed to the Agent»General in London urging the necessity ttf expediting the annexation of New Guinea, in view of the colonising activity now manifest on the part of Germany and Austria.
Letters which have been received here from passengers by the -steamship Lusitania, which left here on July 25 for London, state that a fire broke out on board shortly before the vessel reached Diego Garcia. It is understood that the chatcoal around the refrigerator ignited. % The fire, however, was extinguished in a few hours, and no serious damage was caused.
