THE LATE FLOODS.

Visit of the District Engineer;

Mr F. 0. Dean, Tovrn Olcrk, dv Monday last telegraphed to Elis Worship the Mayor, informing him of the damage done bjr tho 1; heavy rains of last Friday, >'aturday, and Sunday, at the Earaka, Moanatairi and Suabeani creeks, and at the powder magazine, and received the following reply next day :—" Minister for Public Works has instructed the District Engineer to report on flood damage.--^ W. Fbasee." In accordance with the instructions received; Mr Hales arrived by the Kotomahana last night, and to-day made a round! of i'nsp.fctipE. He first visited the powder-magazine and examined the condition of the ground ; the stoppage in the Moanatairi creek culvert under the "Caledonian tip was. next iuspected, Mr Hales himself going up the tnnnel to tho point where the timbers have broken down. A cab was then taken, and in company with the Foreman of Works and the Town Clerk, the- damage to the sea wall from Hocky Point to, the Cemetery road, and the Sunbeam creek, were inspected. .From thence the parly returned to the Borough Council works at the Kuranui culvert, and the next place visited was the Karaka creek. The party, proceeded up the creek as far as Burns' store, Mr Hales taking note, of the various mullock tips in the,: creek, and examining it down to the sea. In speaking of this creek, heexpressed the opinion that the Borough was most unfortunately placed , being apparentlycalled upon to provide means not only for the.removal of all debris and water in itself, but also from all the effects of mining and other works and progressive industries, occurring outside the Borough for considerable distances. He thought it was a matter ( that should be represented in tbislight to Governme.Dt by the authorities. Mr Hales [ will not, of course, give any direct-opinion i as to his estimate of the damage sustained, &c, but will forward his report to' Government, from whom'a reply will be sentto the Council. ..

Mr Hales was this afterneon engaged inspecting the railway works.
