We are gratified indeed to see some attempt made by Goldfields Representatives in the House to cause their voices
being heard, by making a movement in the direction of combined action, with the interests of their districts as the basis .of their action. !fhe large mineral resources of the colony, which have played so im-. portant a part in. its development during the last twenty-two years, have been grossly neglected since the reign of Land was instituted, and doubtless when the acres of tho colony are hypothecated to their fullest extent, some Ministry will look disconsolate in the direction of more taxation; feel doleful over the fact that there is no more land to sell, and experience some satisfaction perhaps in the reflection that " Well, we hare the goldfields to fall back upon for revenue purposes." It will, then, in all likelihood, commence an encouragement of that which has been so long neglected, and which with careful fostering, would, with--1 put a shadow of a doubt, have been a I strong joint in the colonial vertebrae. • In j the adjoining colonies th» removal of disabilities in connection with mining, and ' the manner in ' which the industry has been' in every possible way aided, have borne most satisfactory fruits-, and although in each of them the acquisition of land has been eagerly sought, wool kings have reigned, groin monopolies have | existed, manufacturing rings hare lived, I and other considerations and industries
