Ministers; were, syvqrn ia on Saturday afternoon shoy^ Stout from Lytteltori, and hare been to/ /gether almost the whole time since. It is generally believed that the Opposition, will attack the'new Administration upon the Address-in-Eeply. They would hare Been disposed to give the Ministry fair trial, • but cannot get over some of their objections to the radical and insular elements in the Ministry ; it has therefore j been decided to show themi nomercy.
I hare it on good authority ilhat Mr Ormond will give a general support to the new Government; this probably will upset the calculations of the Opposition, who hoped that. Mr Ormond would not give his. adhesion to the new party, and; the faction M Mr, Ormond will probably affect a few votesY' "':"' .
The result of the no-confidence debate on. the Address in-Reply is extremely problematical, .but when disposed, of, another fight over the Chairmanship of Committees, will be made a party, question. ■ ■. -v-.'..,;-.' •■s ^; --.^t -.\v,.'i-••-■.:;■: • Sir Julius Yogel has secured a room within the Buildings; next to- the Press Chambers, and will reside upon the spot: during the sitting of the session.
!A! rumor was current last night to the effect that^.CiiptrMQm^.hadvacclp^edrth'e'' vacant, seat in the new Cabinet; the-state* merit is at least premature, as no deterhas been arrived at' as to filling the vacancy. ;;Thc ; Post. last.night, in a-. leading article, new; Ministry' the right to place its policy well before the ; country, before it is assailed ; but fears that anxiety, for office, will result/in.."-a series; of unprofitable: strtiggles. , The- article goes on to say, ..'«.'With^eyery Qapabilityand 4<?sire. to dp; , good useful work for the pubKc" good, the new house will wefea^firid itself forced intofa series of unprofitable struggles for power, between would-be leaders, each unable to hold office. even if he should attain it temporarily. M; It will indeed be ;K~ matter of regret if the time of ■ the new House^-decidedlyone:of;v the best Houses the colony* has had for years past ■ be wasted in unprofitable struggles of this kind. If ; tiie new Government is ejected from officeon the Address-in* JJeply,/it will certainly have every reason to complain' of not being fairly treated by the House, and will be justified in using everj means in its power to secure' an opportunity of fully unfolding its policy. A man named Harker, an auctioneer from Napier, arrived today with a petition for presentation to the House, praying that.Mr Ormond be unseated for corrupt practices. r ~ Later"," 1 p.m. The rumor that Mr Sheehan is to be called to the Upper House is not confirmed, although there is- apparently some foundation for it. It is said that he may sit there for the present session, or until he can secure^ a seat in the House of Representatives. . ,
Ministers are not to be seen near Parliament House; they are incubating at Sir Julius Vogel'a residence. Parliament wiil be openfed to-morrow by the Governor in person, but nothing more than business of a formal nature, such M setting up Sessional Committees,
will be attempted before Thursday, when the Address iu-fieply will bs moved by Mr McKenaie, member for Mount Ida. It is not yet'fenown who witl second the Address. Mr'McKeczie (Moeraki) and Mr Walker (Wakanui) will whip for the Ministry. Mr Hanilin, in anticipation of a fight for the Chairmanship of Committee has donned the blue ribbon, and says it is wotking well.
