Onk of the winding ropes in the Big Pump shaft broke this afternoon. Only the empty cage was attached to it, and fortunateJy it was near the 640ft. level at the time, so no damage was done. The rope has only been in use about two years, the cause of its having rotted being the,steam in the shaft. The offender stated that if let off this her first before the Court-she would leave the district. A fine of 20s and costs, or in default two days' iiuprisonmeut, was recorded against Mary. A young man named Charles Peterson,' who wbb brought up on a similar charge, and had been mixed up with the last offender when the latter was arrested, was treated in a similar manner.
