CHARGE DISMISSED.

[PEB PbESS ASSOCIATION.J

Gisbobne, Yesterday. The case of Jtteesv. Locke, for alleged corrupt practices during the recent election, occupied the Court three days and three evenings. Mr Sees acknowledged that Mr Locke had not been guilty of direct treating, but still held that his agents were guilty of bribery, and that the principal was bound by the act of the agents. He contended that treating was an offence at common law, especially "with malt liquors, during an election. Mr Beea cited several instances in England, and also contended that electors had been employed as clerks, canvassers', and, in one instance, a Deputy-Returning Officer has been employed as canvasser by Mr Locke. Mr ,ißrassey. contended that the treating must be on the'day of polling, And tbe drink must be supplied in quantities twiththe^, knowledge;/) ojf ; \the candidate. There was no connection of Mr Lock6 fs supporters with him.^ Every 'payment had been made innocently, and «ot with corrupt intention. Mr Booth, E.M., said he did not gee anything in the case to put Mr Locke on his trial. Everything had be?n done cautiously, and with no intent to break the law. He dismissed the charge—After the decision of the Bench Mr Rees said : V Mr Locke had better bring an action against-me for malicious prosecution."—The decision of the Bench was received wiCh cheers by persons waiting outside. ,
