ELECTORAL.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sin,—¥or years past the Thames has been unfortunate in returning an Opposiv tionist, and in the election of either candidate an Oppositionist will almost undoubtedly be -again returned, both candidates being Grey. -liet us carefullyichoose" ihe bae who will be moat likely to serfe ; 'us best. Mr Speight's chief recommendation appears to be the fact that he is possessed of a glib tongue, but that-hedidany thing whatever for the district be represented when be sat for Auckland GifcyEaßt is extremely problematical. There is bo doubt that for the past two years by systematic cally crying down, the Government in power, and, rarely it.ever, allowing them credit for any good, he has been the means of in many ways retarding the progress of the district which he now desires to represent. That he made a gallant fight at the last election, and that be is honest in his purpose of serving us I do not doubt, but he has been tried and like many a better man —found wanting. To put it mildly we know he is not popular in the capital city. Colonel Eraser; is yjßt untried, but in faithfully serving the Thames he has everything to gain.. Re is largely interested in mining and other property, and the : advancement of the Itlistricti means his own prosperity. Besides being thoroughly posted in the requirements of the district, he is" known tp hold, reasonable and intelligent views on all social questions and is capable of giv.ing intelligent expression to these views. With Sir George in power. he could serve us folly as well as Mr Speightj as well as with the present Government (or, as is most' probable, most of its constituent parts),, at; the head, of affairs, whereas, in the. ialter ease Mr Speight, would be (worse than useless, having always displayed such enmity to the ruling powers* v ;There would be still some- hope for the district in baring Colonel Fraser as our representative.—lam, Ac., -
