The Hon. Walter W. Johnston has resigned bis seat (which he held without portfolio) in the Ministry, and it is pro> bablethat a member of the Legislative Couucil will be appointed to succeed him. New J Js.P. The following gentlemen hare been gazetted Justices of the Peace :—-Alexander Aitken, of Thames ; John Blermerhassett Beech, of Keeftou ; Frank Stephen Canning, of Gore; Frederick M. ChapniaD, of Bahota, Taranaki; John Elliott, of Strath-«Taieri; Thomas Ohute Ellis, of Five Rivers, Wallace ; George Fraser, of Auckland,- Isaac Green, of North-east Valley, Dunedin ; William Edward Ivey, «of Lincoln, Selywn; John Lawson, of Auckland; John Howe Mandeno, of Te Awamutu, Waipa; and William Wilson, of Patea.
Arrived : The German barque Phoenix, from London, 97 days out, On the 20th of February an apprentice named Xretchd, while making a sail fast, lost his footing, and fell overboard. The night was dark and wet,'and a gale was blowing. A life* buoy was thrown over, but the lad was never seen again.
