COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting was held at the Chambers, Mary street, at 2.30 p.m. this afternoon. Present—Crs Brodie (in the Chair), Bull, Bagnall, Coutts, Deeble, and Fraser.
The usual routine business was disposed of. , Treasury vouchers for £245 14s sd, goldfields revenue for March; £1712 ss. progress payments under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act; £59 4s, progress payment on account of Karangahake track; £186 13s, rates on Crown lands within the County; and £100, subsidy towards King's bridge to Kapanea mine, were received.
The Property Tax Commissioner forwarded the roll for native lands in the Thames County, in Maori.
A copy of the Ohinemuri sfparation petition and signatures was received from the Colonial Secretary.
LETTEBS WEEE BEAD FEOM—
The manager of the Union Bank of Australia, asking why the £'145 due from Government on Hart and Horn's contract had not come to hand.—lt was resolved that the Chairman send an urgent telegram to the Under-Secretary asking the reason why the money had not been forwarded.
Finiay McLiver, asking the Council for enough water-race iron to make 200 ft. of 9-inch piping, to supply his battery with water power. He had ordered what he first considered sufficient piping; but having to shift his battery, he found himself 200 ft. short.—-Referred to Water Race Committee.
The Secretary of the Paeroa Library Committee asked the Council to favor them with a subscription, as they intended to make considerable additions to the buildings.—£s was granted.
H. N. Baanall, Secretary of the Turua Literary Club, asking the Council for a donation to its funds.—On the motion of Cr Brodie, seconded by Cr Fraser, it was *resolved that £5 be granted. The Assistant Surveyor General, in answer to a request that a large number of roads in the Thames County might be surveyed, stating that some of them would be taken in hand from time to time as an officer could be spared.—Resolved that Mr Smith be informed of the necessity for the roads being dedicated. A. Hogg on behalf of the Ohinemuri Coal Prospecting Association, asking the Council to repair the dray roads crossings to Waitekauri to enable them to get out a trial parcel.—Kesolved that the Council are unable to do the work.
J. W. Walker, enclosing a copy of the memorandum presented by him to the Premier, re his scheme for working a portion of the Upper Waiotahi district.— The letter- was referred to a committee consisting of Crs Brodie, Coutts, Bull, and Bagnall to report on. J. E. Coney, Chief Postmaster, requesting the Council to make some slight repairs to the Kotokohu Gorge rond, so that the mail contractor might resume running a coach, and asking when the Kotokohu swamp road was to be metalled. —No action was taken.
W. Deeble, asking the Council to supply him with some 12in. drain pipes and a fewloads of gravel to repair a much needed crossing in front of his property at Parawai bridge, he finding the labour.— Granted. (Left Sitting.)
The following report was laid on the table:— . . EEPOKT ONBOARD <H?,,WOBKS. Your Board niaifthe honofcto report as follows :—Final arrangements have been made for the Karangahake track to be taken through to its termination. The bridges on the road near Puru have been repaired. The Collarbone Creek track has been rendered fit for quartz traffic, and the owners of the Adelaide and Hauraki claims have received permission to lay down their tramways in conformity with the Council's resolution. Descriptive specifications in accordance with the gazetted regulations under the " Boads and Bridges' Construction Act," have been prepared for the bridges on the Hastings road, which it is proposed to erect, out of a sum of £2500 for expenditure on works in the Special Eating District of Hastings, and for which the necessary poll will shortly be taken. On the 21st May your Board opened tenders for the following works:—For the Mackaytown-Owharoa road deviation: Albert Butler, in the sum of £1119, accepted. For shingling and painting the County Chambers : Wm. Twentyman, in the sum of £26, accepted. On the 31st May—For widening, re-forming, and metalling the Kauaeranga Valley road: John O'Donoghue's tender is recommended for acceptance in the sum of £455 10s, provided his sureties are considered satisfactory. For the Waitekauri road : P. Mulligan's tender in the sum of £74 14s, was accepted.—Alexandeb Bjsodie, Chairman of Committee.
