Board of Education.
( The following extract is from the Herald and is their report of business interesting to Thames people, transacted at the last meeting of the Board of Education, held in Auckland on Friday last :— Mr O'Donoghue. — The Secretary brought up the report of the committee to consider the letters which this teacher had sent to the Board, as follows : Report of Committee appointed (9th, May,', 1884) to consider and report upon Mr O'Donoghue'a correjpondenoe with the Board. Your oommittee having considered theletters from Mr O'Donogkue, dated March 24th ani 25th, April 23rd, and May 2ad sth, 7th (2), and Bth, beg to report as follows:—1. Be claim to rent allowance: Your committee cjnnot recommend that Mr O'Donogbne's claim be allowed. It appears that in conse* quenre of the Government having prohibited toe payment of rent allowances from buildings fund, all such allowances have ceased at the resignation or removal of the teachers, and have not been renewed to their successor*. Mr .Horatio Phillipa is the only teacher now in. ' , receipt of allowance for rent. The allowance (£3O a jear) was a condition of bis engagement from the district of Westland in 1879. (See minutes of Board dated April, 1879.) 2. Letter dated 7th May re Newspaper- report t Your committee cannot advise the Board to , late any cognizance of press reports of its meetings. 3. Be decrease in numbers at Wsio-Karaka School t Your committee are of opinion that the correspondence shows that the decrease in numbers at the Waio-Karaia school is attributable to circumstances beyond Mr O'Donoghae's control. 4. Be management of Thames training classes: Mr O'Donoghue asks to have the sole traiaing of the assistants and pupil teachers employed at the Bchool under his charge. Your com* mittee cannot recommend that this request be complied with, unless the Board is disposed to alter the existing arrangvments for the training of teachers throughout the whole district.—(Signed) Riohabd Hobbs, Chair* man; W. P. Moat, James W. Oahb. Auckland, 83th May, 1884. Mr Luke moved that the report be adopted.—Mr Carr said he put his name - to the report, although not in every respect coinciding with the opinions of the other members of the committee. He would be prepared to mote the discontinuance of Mr Phillip's rent allowance at three months. As to the charges against Mr Phillips made by Mr O'Dbnoghue, they were admitted by Mr Phillips, for Mr Phillips required the work to be pat in the papers; the papers were to be given to Mr Phillips, but they were not returned by Mr Phillips. He (Mr Carr) could not see what use there was in having the work done by papers if the papers were not returned.—The Chairman said he did not understand Mr Carr to make any such strong objection in' committee. ' As to the admission of Mr Phillips, the committee had expressed an opinion that more information should be obtained. As to the rent allowance, Mr Phillips had distinctly stipulated with the Board, before he left Westland, that rent should be allowed him. It was competent. for the Board to discpntinne his allowance, but it would appear invidious and unjust if this case were to be regarded as " singled out!' for the object in view.—Mr Goldie thought the reason, assigned by the committee for the discontinuance was sufficient to justify the action of the Board, if it thought fit to agree to Mr Carr's resolution. Ho seconded the reso* lution.—The Secretary, in reply to a question, said j\f r Phillips' salary was £315 a year, ho reoeived £ICD a year for the training class, £30 for rent allowance, and his wife received a salary of £80 a year. After some discussion the report was adopted.
