Expression fails, words lack the power To pourtray half the thoughts that swell In Friendship's breast, as draws the hour Apace, when we must say, "jFarewell!" Memory reveres with fond regret The record kept by her so well Of many a scene since first we mot. Dimmed by no shadow of " Farewell!" Bright happy past, too quickly fled, When o'er our path a radiance fell; By Love the cheering light was shed, 'Twill gild with brightness this " Farewell." For since at duty's call we sever, That thought will half the gloom dispel; Such clouds a silver lining ever Reveal/if after a "Farewell!" ..*. Thy transient stay has not proved vain— For during it we've felt the spell * v' Of friendship true,, and this our gain Exceeds the sorrow of " Farewell!" Ah, in this beauteous world, the lack Of hearts too genial to repel, Is such, that till we hail thee, back We'll breathe for thee a true " Farewell!" Fondly recalled thy name will be By us, and love will oft impel Our thoughts to wander o'er the sea, To one we grieved to bid " Farewell!" We'll miss thee, in how many ways We shall not c'en attempt to tell; To winter fire, and sunbright days Thy presence lent a charm—" Farewell!" Oft fern i and flowers will now appear To represent thee ; hill and dell Association will endear For thy sake, gentle friend—"Farewell!" And when beyond the ocean's wave On bright Australia's shores you dwell, ■. List, as you hear the waters lave For us, low murmuring " Fare thee well" Not as a thought to cause a sigh, But potent mournful thoughts to quell In thy dear heart; and light thine eye . To know our prayer is, " Fare thee well!','. " Farewell!" Ah, 'tis no empty phrase! Why should we count it as a knell, When 'tis our Father's word that says, "I am Thy trust," thou must farewell.
