THE BIG KAURI TREE.

(To the Editor of the S< vening Star.)

Sia, —I am very grateful for your assurance that the big kauri is in no clanger, bub in an important matter like this a little persistency will do no harm. There are, as 120 doubt you know, two immense kauri treea —one at the head of the Jararu Creek, in the middle of the stream, and another that is reached by the Waiotahi Greek, and stands near the horsl? track to the settlements at the head of the Puru Creek. Now the latter tree, near the horse track, ia the shrine to which so many pilgrimages are made. If this tree be protected all those in its neighborhood should be protected, also, otherwise it will die. The large kauris on the track, the rimu trees and undergrowth should have, their titles to life clearly made out, for a corapleta destruction has visited the whole of the forest'trees lower down the side of the hill. It is an utter desolation on the Tararu side of the Look-out Hock, at the head of the Waiotahi Creek, and I believe you can save the forest around our big kauri if the proper course be adopted. I am informed that Mr Casey has purchased the timber in that bush, and it should be ascertained from him whether he means to cub down the trees near the big kauri tree, or even those along the track. The work of destruction has gone far enough in that direction, and every effort ought to be made to save the remaining trees.—l am, &c,

F. N. A. W.
