The boat found ashore at Lake Beach, Forth Shore, as' referred to in our last issue, has been found not to be. that in which H. Allom and the two Spencers left here, but their friends are becoming anxious at their long absence, and steps are being taken to discover their whereabouts. Mr Spencer is now: in Auckland with this object, and Mr Allom will leave here to-night in the s.s. Pearl, bound for the Barrier, to see if the young vojagers are there. To-hobbow, May Ist, the season for shooting pheasants will open. Several local Bportß have taken out licenses, and the weather promising to bo fine, we have no doubt the birds will have a lively time of "it for a few days. In connection with recently sent circulars from the Education Board to the various* school Committees, fishing for complaints against the local schools' drill instructor, we are glad to learn that the Board has decided to take no further action in the matter. A SPEOIAIi meeting of the Borough Council was held this morning, to pass the roll for the year, and a number of defaulters' names were struck off, and the roll as amended passed. The Town Clerk was instructed to call tenders in Auckland, Paeroa, and the Thames for printing ifc. At the.last meeting of the Harbor Board, it was mentioned that there was in ttie powder magazine about half a ton of dynamite, left there by an Australian company now defunct, and which was evidently the worse for keeping, and should be disposed of in some way. Nothing definite was done at the time, but we now learn that it has been decided to dispose of it to-morrow by taking it out in a boat and distributing it in the gulf, where it will quickly become decomposed. The Police Court was occupied for a few minutes this morning, when a first offender was fined ss, or ordered to be imprisoned until the rising of the Court, on a charge of drunken-, ness.. H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M., occupied the Bench. <■<*■'■ We are authorised/to state that no license has been issued to .warrant the destruction of the magnificent kauri tree growing at the head of the Tararu Creek. The Warden has notified that the. tree is required for public purposes, and anyone damaging it will be ,pro3;.jutcd. Thus an act of vandalism is made impossible. Vesteymbn of St. George's Church are notified that the meeting announced for tonight has been postponed till Tuesday next. SrONOE Otto Htro-, the Swiss medical clairvoyant announces that he will visit the Thames onjJTuesday next, May sth. A consignment of prime chesso, from a good dairy, will be sold by Messrs Banks and Co. at Parawai to-morrow afternoon. Me G. Cbookee, of Brown 'street, calls altantion to bis stock of boot 3 and shoes (which he is selling very cheaply) in another column. > These was no share list issued this afternoon. No sales were effected during the day, though Imperials were in demand at 15s, with no sellere. Temperance advocates would evidently find an excellent field for their labours among the pearl stations of Torres Straits. Some of them, it is said, are the scenes of frightful drinking bouts. The crews of different boats buy cases of liquor from their employers, meet at some island, and haTe a day's debauchery, Malays and Pol>nesians go to the hotels, get bottles of grog, with which they retire into the bush to get drunk and quarrel among themselves, the knife occasionally being called into play, and on the lone islands in the straits there aro at time] veritable scenes of Pandemonium. A shipment of blue ribbon is required there. AtrcTBALIAKS and New Zenlanders will be diapoeed to question soaie of the statements of the latest descriptive writer on California in affirming that in that country the crogs are the tallest, the waterfalls the highest, the trees the bigg: st, and the flowers the gayest and most abundant in the world. It would be interesting to settle that " big tree" and waterfall question as between California and Australasia. EoPATA is evidently a believer in the system of compulsory education, as the following from the Poverty Bay Herald, will show: At one of the villages at Waiapu, where Ropata's influence prevails, a Maori child is hardly ever absent from school. There is a system of fining the parents for truancy, 5s for a first offence, 10s lor a second and so on. This system works so well that en absentee is a great rarity, the children being always sent except when sick. A ohbistohuech telegram, of Monday's date, says :—'■■ At the Police Court a woman was accused of drunkenness. She pleadc-1 that she was not drunk, but, had gone on to the Salvation Army ground at fcydeuham. She then lifted up her arm, and in a loud hysterical voice called out " You have given up the world to the devil and his angele, give God the glory." She repeated these and similar expressions, and gesticulated and raved. Twq polremen endeavoured to re> move her from the dock, but she clung to it so tenaciously that assistance of a third was necessary. The Bench esid her conduct was perhaps caused by a mixture of drink and Salvation Army. She should be finci 10s, or 48 hours' imprisonment." An accident of a peculiar nature happened yesterday afternosn at the boiling-down works of the Wanganui Meat Company. A vat full of boi-ing fat exploded and blew the roof of the building off. The top of the vat was sent about 80 yards. No serious injury was done to anyone. The concussion was heard a long distance away. • The viait of Si? G-eorge Grey to the South is intended to be an extended one, but the date of his departure from here is not yet definitely settled. It is thought probable he may address the City East electors before going. jDoctobs Gave Him Up.—-"Is it possible that Mr Godfrey is up and at work, and cured by so simple a remedy?" "I assure you it is true that he is entirely cured, and with nothing but Hop Bitters, and only ten dayi ago his doctors gave him 'up and gaid he must die." " Well-a-day ! If that wso I will go this minute and get some for mypofcp'Geerge. I know hops &re good." Bead . .V, .7,'
Me ALtAN McDoNAM), member for the East Coast, left for England by the mail steamer Australia yesterday. He has not resigned his Beat, but it is bolieved he has left a written resignation with a protmneht member of his party in the House to be used in case it is thought desirable; -but in prospect of a dissolution he did not see the .wisdom of putting his constituents to the trouble of an election. He cannot be back for a year. Intense excitement continues afc Eo;3, I Westiand, and parties are out in all directions pegging leases. Some stone waa brought to town on Saturday, showing specks of gold, some the size of a pin's head. Samples were crushed by pestle and mortar in the presence of a score of practical miners, who unani* mously agreed that the result was very payable. The reef is slated to be well defined, and from two to five feet thick.
" iEG-MHS" in the Australasian, has the following :—There is the good old story of the sailors in the sinking boat making a collection as one f rm of a religious servics. This has been varied to Buit the climate to a similar performance by swagmen under a gum-tree during a severe thunderstorm. But this did happen a few Sundays ago in a Presbyteriani Church in one of the suburbs of Melbourne. The congregation had assembled, and after the bell ceased they patiently inspected each other for a quarter of an hour. It waß then announced tkafc the pastor was from home, that Mr Boanerges, who was to fill his pulpit, had not yet arrived, and a hymn was given out and duly s*ung to fill up the time. At the conclusion things were-no better. The locum tenens was still not forthcoming. The managers, however, wore equal to the occasion. They -took the plateß round at once. The congregation paid up, but with a sense of fcsing got at, for they j eventually had to disperse without any other religiom exercise that forenoon. Feeis Yoijng Again.—" My mother vr~3 afflicted a long time with neuralgia and a dull, heavy, inactive condition of ihe whole system, headache, nervous prostration, andwasalmo3t helpless. No physicians or medicines did her any good. ' Three months ago slie began to use Hop Bitters, with such good effect that she seems and feels young again, although over seventy years old."—A LADY IN R. I. Look up
