THE BIG KAURI TREE.
(To the Editor of the & vening Star.)
Sir.—ln reference to the letter that appeared in your columns yesterday on the big kauri tree, I beg to enclose the names of two subscribers (at 10s each) towards a sum of money in order to purchase the tree for the town. There ought to be little difficulty in raising £50 for such a purpose. There is no doubt, that the purchaser of the kauri timber is.about to cut down the big kauri tree, and with praiseworthy enterprise is about'to send a section of it to the British Museum or to Kew Gardens. We prefer, however, to keep our tree alive for a couple of hundred years longer if the fates will permit. —I am, &0., J. A. [The attention of our correspondent is directed to a local on the subject, which appears in another column.—Ed. Stab]
