Summary of the Month.
TMe usual Ministerial pre-sessional addresses are being delivered, but little of in enlightening character has been so far contributed to the public by them. The coming session promises to be anything but a calm or quiet one, and even if the life of the Ministry is prolonged until the Parliament dies a natural death by efHnxion of time, the members of the Cabinet will have anything but a "good time " of it during tbe coming session. Efforts at retrenchment are being made at head quarters, and considering the necessity of bringing our expenditure within our income, the attempt is certainly praiseworthy. • Local efforts in the same direc" tion are also being tried, the necessity in this case proving also that a state of " over-running the constable-" exists. The Government seems to bow to the general feeling that no more colonial loans must be floated, but the local bodies are apparently of opinion that more money should be raised by them, especially in the matter of harbor works. There is a growing feeling existent here that were more capital put into prospecting operations, much benefit would accrue. Only a limited area of the flat portion of the field has been tried, and a number of experienced ones are of opinion that the hills should be tried by means of main tunnels, and their contents ascertained.
