This day.
Prescott, a young man in the employ of Rennieand Dornwell, butchers, committed suicide by hanging in a water closet early this morniDg. Monetary difficulties are supposed to be the cause. He was only recently married.
The annual financial statement of the Kaitangata Belief Fund Committee shows that the amount on hand and invested to the credit of the fund is £13,050. During the year ending Feb. 29, £1255 has been paid in cash to the widows and children' of the deceased miners; £298 was advanced to the receipients for various pur* poses. • The performances at the Princess threatre terminated somewhat abruptly last night, owing, to an accident by which Miss Carry Nelson was severely injured. During the progress of the play of " Drink," at the second scene of the first act, viz., the wash-house scene, while Miss Nelson, Miss Eosamond, Miss S*. John, and Mrs Knight were standing on a kind of bridge held by ropes at each end, and fastened by taking a turn round cleats nailed on two upright posts, and while they were preparing to come down upon the stage, oce of the cleats suddenly gave way, and the four ladies fell to the bottom of the cellar amongst a lot of debris, the height being about 30 feet from where they were standing. Miss Nelson was the principal sufferer; her back was injured to some degree, but it it is hoped there will be no permanent hurt. Miss Rosamond's injuries appear to be a sprained ankle and contused arm ; while Miss St. John was severely crushed. Mrs Knight had her knee injured, and her ankle sprained.
