AUCKLAND RACE MEETING.

About 5000 persons attended at the Ellerslie course yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired. His Excellency was unable to be present, owing to the mourning observed consequent on the death of the late Prince Leopold. Several officers from the Japanese man-of-war attended.

Tradesmen's Plate Handicap, 1 mile and 240 yards.—Consul, 1; Witiora, 2 ; Waipiti; 3. Woodpecker, Paramena, Katipo, and Taipouri also ran. The betting was 2 to 1 against Waipiti, 3 to 1 Woodpecker, Consul, and Witiora; 5 to 1 Paramena, and 10 to 1 Taipouri. A splendid start was effected, but Taipouri was left on the post. Paramena took the lead uutil passing the cutting, Consul second, Woodpecker third. In the cutting Woodpecker came up and Witiora ran into position, Paramena falling back. A great race up the straight ensued, Consul winning by half a-length from Witiora, Waipiti third. Woodpecker was fourth. Time, 2mins 34secs. 677 in the totalisator, £69 on the winner; dividend £3 14s.

Mares' Produce Stakes, for 2 year olds j celts, Bst lOlbs; fillies, Bst 8lbs; 6 furlongs.—Necklace, 1; JTrupp, 2; Carbineer, 3. Tetford and Revolver also ran. The betting was 6 to 4 on Krupp. 5 to 2 against Necklace, 4 to 1 Carbineer, 8 to 1 the rest. Necklace went off with a lead and was never caught. £679 in the totalisator, 179 on the winner ; dividend, £3 Bs.

Hurdle Race, 2\ miles; 9 flights of hurdles.—Minuet, 1; Billy-go-by-em, 2; Fair Play, 3. Lennard declared to win with Shotover, Betting: 2 to \ against Minuet, 2 to 1 Chandler, Shotover, and Billy-go-by-em, 5 to 1 Fair Play, 10 to 1 Pearl. The race was an excellent one. Fair Play took the lead at the start, all the rest rose to the first hurdle together, when Minuet went to the front, followed by Fair Play and Pearl. Coming down the turn to the straight Chandler closed the gap which divided him from the others. At the back of the.course Minuet still held a commanding lead, and Pearl bad run into second place, but in the cutting Faie Play came up second. In the straight it was seen that Minuet held all safe, but Billy cane up with a rush and cane io second.

Minuet won by three lengths. The time was 4mins 36secs. £636 in the totalisator, with 218 on the winner ; dividend, 525.

Faster Handicap, 2 miles.—Administrator and Eadames ran a dead heat; Normanby came next. Hercules, Yuba \ Bill, and Libeller also ran. Betting : 7 to 4 against Nelson, 2 to 1 Leonora, 4 to 1 Normanby and Administrator, 5 to 1 Maori, 19 to 1 the others. Fitzhercules went off with a lead, followed by the rest in a cluster, and maintained a good position for If miles, and then died away. Eadames was well up, the favourites lying back, Leonora being last in passing the stand. After the last round Adminis» trator had run into first position, Fitzhercules second. A grand race home ensued; coming into the straight IS ormanby led, under whip, barely by ahead ; Radames then took the command, and appeared to be winning, but Administrator came up with wonderful speed, and raced to the post, finishing a dead dead heat with Radames. Normanby was third, half-a-length behind. Nelson fourth and Leonora fifth. This was the best time ever made on the racecourse for this distance. There was great excitement at the result, and Radames and Administrator divided the stakes instead of running off. Time, 3mins. 55|secs. Totalisator had 54 on Radames, dividend £8 14s, and 163 on Administrator, dividend £2 17s.

Selling Bace, 1J miles.—Faramena, 50 soys, 1; Sham, SOsors, 2; King Quail, 100 soys, 3. Flageolet, Slider, and Merlin also ran. The betting was 2 to 1 against Faramena, 6 to 4 Sham, 4 to 1 Quail, and 8 and 10to 1 the rest. Paramen» went off with a lead, and won by half a»length from Sham and Quail, being almost a dead heat for second place. Time, 2mins, 21Jsecs. Paramena was bought in by the owner at the upset price. 620 in the totalisator, 218 on the winner, dividend 51s.

Publicans' Purse, l£ miles.—Consul, 1; Waipiti, 2 ; Leonora, 3. Mitrailleuse also ran. Betting even on Consul, 6 to 4 against Leonora, 2 to 1 Waipiti. The horses went off to a splendid start, Mitrailleuse led, Leonora second, and Consul third, but on turning out of the straight Leonora went to the front, with Consul second. In the cutting all were in a cluster, and coming out of it Consul led, Waipiti second. All came home under the whip, and Consul won by a length from Waipiti, Leonora three lengths behind. Time, 2mins. 19secs. 582 in the totalisator, 176 on the winner. Dividend 595.

Complaints were made as to the totalisator not registering properly cr giving the correct total. The police intend taking proceedings on the ground that the machine was not according to the Act.

Steeplechase, 150 sots, 3§ miles.-— Lennard's Chandler, 1. New Year, Billygo-by-'em, and Flying Scud also ran. The betting was 6t04 on Chandler, who alone finished. New Year pulled up dead lame after going two miles, and the others baulked repeatedly. Dividend, £1 19s.
