The County Council has received the following communication from the Government :—"Public Works Office, Wellington, 27th March, 1884.— tfe Thames-Tau-ranga road deviation between Mackaytown and Owharoa.—Sir, —l am directed by the Minister for Public Works to inform you that the survey of the above deviation being completed, it is found that the length of the proposed new road to be'formed will be about 2 miles 74 chains, the estimated cost of which is £4750, while the cost of repairing the present road is estimated at about £3750. As, however, the making of the deviation appears to be preferable to repairing the old road, the Minister directs me to say that, although he cannot see his way to finding the whole of the necessary funds for the work, he would, nevertheless, be willing to hand over to the County the balance of £1348 16s 8d remaining on the vote, provided the County will undertake to complete the work themselve with such grants as they may be able to obtain for it from year to year under the Boads and Bridges Construction Act. In the event of your agreeing to the above arrangement, and signifying the same by letter, the Minister will give instructions for the amount (£1348 16s 8d) to be placed at the disposal of the County in the usual way.—l have, &c, C. J. 6'Connob, Under-Secretory Public Works."—The Council has decided to accept the terms offered.
