OUR MINES.
NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL
The manager reported on Saturday as follows :—" During the past month 564 loads of quartz have been reduced for the yield of 5790zs retorted gold (melted 572 ounces lOdwts). The shaft is down 37it below No. 5 level, and white sandstone is v now showing in the north-eastern end, the hard bar of rock having evidently changed its underlie, which is now dipping to the south-west. Should it keep this underlie we will not have to crosscut through it to intersect the lead at No. 6 level. The stopes on No. 2 lead in No. 1 section east, above this level, are looking very well, and are producing good crushing dirt. No. 4 level: Stoping on No. 2 lead eastward of ths shaft was resumed this week. The lead is of a good size, looks very promising, but has shown no gold as yet. The stopes on No. 1 reef, above this level, are being continued as usual. The reef is fully sft thick, and the quartz continues to crush very well at the batteries. No. 3 level : The western drive on No. 1 reef is in 115 ft from the- crosscut, and another Bft of driving ought to bring us 10 the I break. The reef here still continues to look well. lv the leading stopo, which is about 40ft from the face, the reef is very large, and is being broken out for fully Bft in width. The rich mineral seam which was on the footwali is now striking through the reef towards the hangingwall. The remainder of the stopes here are looking about the same. Fair progress is being made in the eastern drive, through a good class of country, and the reef maintains its size and appearance, but no gold has been seen as yet. Two shifts are employed sinking the air shaft behind the engine house; the country is a firm sandstone, which works very well.—G. S. Ciaee." r - WAIOTAHI. The manager on Saturday evening banked 1920zs 6dwts of retorted; gold, the payable result of three weeks' operations in the mine and at the battery, during which time 130 toDs of general dirt were crushed. Satisfactory progress is being made with the surface works. MOANATAIKI. Cleaning up and retorting for the month took place to day for the payable yield of 106'ozs of melted gold, for which 71 tons of general dirt and a hundredweight of picked stone were treated. The manager reported on Saturday as follows :—" 132 ft level, No. 9: Western stopes have yielded 45lbs of picked stone since my last. The goldproducing portion of the reef is from 3 to 8 inches in thickness, and about 30ft in length. The eastern stopes are stopped in consequence of the excessive heat, which made progress very slow and expensive. I therefore commenced a winze on Thursday last, directly below Gutbrie's workings, promising them not to inconvenience them by so doing. Thß country is highly favorable for gold, and the three branch ieaders on which we are sinking show a little gold when broken, but not rich. Guthrie's specimens were found in small patches here aud there for 40ft or 50ft in length. The gold bearing leaders mentioned' are inclining to each other in their descent. Morning Star stopea are producing payable quartz. Tunnel leyel: Rise on branch of No. 1 reef—Colors of gold are found pretty freely at each breaking. The gold-bearing portion averages about 4 inches in width. The trial lot from Waitemata section, referred to last week, gave 2ozs of amalgam. Being satisfied of its not being payable, we resumed the drive towards main slide.-^J, G. Vivian,'"' CALEDONIAN. Retorting this morning produced the good yield of 2710zs 15dwta retorted gold (2680zs Bdwts melted) from 170 loads of general dirt and a few pounds of picked stone. This is a payable yield for the quantity crushed, though it represents about three mouths' work. Now, howeven that the, Red Queen leader afc No. 2 level has been opened up, the manager hopes to be able to keep 10 head of stamps employed. The reef in the drive at No.
2 level is a strong body of quartz 18 inches wide ; gold is seen freely'each breaking, and the quartz carries good minerals, such as antimony, &c. The stopes above No. 1 level show no change to report, payable grade dirt still coming to hand. THAMES GOLDEN CROWN. The general dirt has not shap;d quite so well this month, but the return from three weeks' crushing, during which time 120 tons of general dirt have been crushed, is 82ozs 16dwts melted gold. i ADELAIDE. I The trial crushing of seven loads from the reef at the General Chute level yielded 4ozs. 12dwts. melted gold, or 13 dwts. per load. This ia considered satisfactory, as the gold is of excellent quality, being worth £3 Is 6d per ounce, and the reef was composed of a number of stringers where the trial was obtained, and the dirt was therefore very mullocky. The lode has been driven on 36ft. in this company's ground, and appears to be making more solid in the face, where a large mineral vein is visible striking towards the lode. The proprietors have determined to confine their operations to this level for the present. ROCIIY POINT. The southern drive on the Adelaide reef is in 16ft. from the boundary, and in breaking the hanging wall branch of the lode oc Saturday evening gold was seen in larger dabs than previously,'it being also very coarse. The reef should be in one solid body in a few feet, The country is a favorable blocky white sandstone, with mineral veins striking into the lode, and a stream of water issuing from the face seems to indicate the presence of a junction close at hand. DART. Retorting took place this morning for the good payable yield of 2720zs gold, reduced on melting to 2690zs lOdwts. The quantity of dirt crushed was 170 loads of general stuff from the stopes on No. 2 reef above No. 3 level, and about 401bs of picked stone. There is nothing fresh to report from the mine. CAMBRIA. The reef in the winze will not be broken till about the middle of the present week. On Saturday afternoon, while stripping the lode, about a pound of good picked stone was secured from a small dropper on the footwall. This is encouraging, as showing that the gold is still carrying down. v SMILE OF FORTUNE (OWHAROA). This company has banked 19ozs 4dwts melted gold, the yield from a crushing of 30 loads, and Sims and party, tributers, have crushed 25 loads general dirt for the good return of 50ozs 14dwts melted gold. MARTHA EXTENDED (WAIHI). The manager, Mr J. Moore, yesterday brought down 117ozs. gold, which was melted to-day, being reduced to 115ozs. This return is for slightly under a month's crushing on general dirt, and is payable. GOLD RETURNS. Caledonian.—Mclnnes and party have crushed 15 loads of quartz for the payable yield of 26ozs. 6dwts. gold. Moanatairi.—Guthrie and party have banked 87ozs. 6dwts. gold from 21 tons quartz and a parcel of specimens. Radical (Owharoa). —A trial lot of 5 tons for Reed and party gave 2ozs. 3dwts. melted gold.
