PATEA.
This day. Two Persons Drowned.
A distressing occurrence happened here on Saturday night. Miss Gardner, stewardess on the s.s. Waverley, and two young men,. William Mitchison and Thomas Laurence, were proceeding to the vessel after witnessing JBlondin's peformance; the night was excessively dark, and when the three were walking along the wharf, Laurence (who. was on the outside) walked off. He caught hold of Miss Gardner to save himself, and she in turn caught hold of Mitchison, all three falling overboard. Mitchison endeavored to save Miss Gardner, but was unable to do so, being very much exhausted when he got out. He gave the alarm, and a party at once proceeded to the spot and commenced dragging. After about half an hour's work, the body of Laurence was recovered, close to where he fell in, and Miss Gardner's body was found next morning about a quarter of a mile down the river. While the work of dragging was going on, a man named Quinn nearly met with a fatal accident; in the darkness he fell off the wharf, striking, the woodwork, and was with great difficulty rescued. An inquest is being held to* day-
