(To the Editor of the Evening Star).
Sic,—l am informed on good authority that the Borough Council has applied to the Government for £2000 to repair the damages caused by the recent flood. This will enable that body to reduce their overdraft in accordance with the demand of the bank manager, and at the same time reflect credit on our worthy Town Glerk for the ingenuity he has displayed in estimating the damage. I see that the Town Clerk is also providing for a further reduction of said overdraft by leaving the creeks in such a state as will certainly cause a more serious flood on the next occasion of heavy rain, and it is quite possible that by the time the inhabitants of the town are completely ruined, the whole of the Borough overdraft will be paid off. Now, sir, it appears to me that as far as the town is concerned, the damage to the Borough is very trifling,—in fact, the flood Sias siived the Borough a large sum of money by bringing down the very best of -aaterialTor the making of roads and footjj paths, and depositing it in many cases oil the very places where it is required, if the Borough would only consent to use it. It is the private individual that has, suffered, who has no.use for material deposited on his property. Who will compensate them? —I am, &c, One of Them.
