London, March 15.

The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under-Seo-retary for the Colonies, in replying to a question, announced that Government would shortly nominate a High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, whose duties would be entirely distinct from those of the Governors of Fiji and New Zealand. The Hon. E. Ashley further stated that Government had informed the various governments of Australasia that if their parliaments pass a resolution in favor of federation by June next, the necessary enabling bill will be introduced in the Imperial Parliament during the present session.

Sir Charles Dilke, President of the Local Government Board, in the House to-day made a statement to the effect that if the Opposition succeed in forcing a dissolution of Parliament, Government will take care to appeal to the country, not upon their Egyptian policy alone, but upon their policy generally.

Telegrams from Tonquin announce that the French troops are following up the recent victory, and are pursuing the Chinese and driving them from various positions in the neighborhood of Bacninh.

The Press generally urge that the troops should advance towards the Chinese frontier.
