French silk manufacturers are reported to be very hopeful as to the capabilities of a.big spider lately discovered in Africa, which weaves a yellow web of great strength and. elasticity. A scene of great excitement occurred W on January 2 in the Royal Windsor'^ Gastle Menagerie, which was exhibiting in Bolton. Delmonieo, the Arabian lion chief, was about to enter a cage containing a group of young lions, when one of them sprang past him as he opened the cage and alighted on the floor in the midst of the people. The latter rushed frantically for the exit, and a; serious pauic ensued. Meanwhile the young lion, as mrieh frightened as the people, ran round among the spectators, pursued by the attendants, wno ultimately managed to secure it in an empty barrel. As the people were nub* ing about, a woman, named Mary Ja,ae Uutterfield, was forced against a cage containing a large fullgrown lioness. The ammal extended its paw beneath the bar* ot her cage and clutched at the woman* head. The attendants seized bars of iron and forks, and struck the enraged lioness f eP<; atedly before she would release her hold. When this was effected the woman, bleeding and terrified, was conveyed to the police-station, where a piece of her fi&alp was found to be torn away, Suppe's new opera, " Africa-Beise/'hai been well received, it is said, at the Stadt Tb.ea.ire, Baden, near Vienna.
