DEEP LEVEL GROSS.
A "-great deal of attention is at present • directed to this mine, in consequence of the recent discovery or gold at the 640 ft. level, and the result of this morning's breaking down of the leader was looked forward to with interest, The news conveyed by the telegram posted at the Corner, to the effect that gold had been freely seen, should be satisfactory. Our reporter visited the mine this afternoon, and found that a stretch of about five feet of the leader had been broken. It underlies very flat, and in consequence has not yet been shot down to the floor of the drive, though all the portion stripped was broken. The leader where showing in the face of the crosscut averages about five or six inches wide; in one place there is nine inches of solid quartz, in others it is not quite so defined, though all ' through carrying excellent mineral. The gold was well distributed through the reef, and the manager picked out about twenty pieces ; some showing strong colors and dabs, and others being rich enough to class as picked stone. The gold is coarse, and is not confined to either wall. It may also be mentioned that it was found on the north side of the leader supposed to be the hangingwall branch of No. 2 lode, while the precious metal found in the rise was obtained on the south side. The men have not yet started to strip the lead southward, it having only been broken for the width of the crosscut. Cleaning up for the month this morning resulted in j;he yield of 21fozs retorted gold from 187 loads of general 1 dirt and oOlbs of picked stone and speci* mens. The melted weight was 2090zs lOdwts. NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL. Retorting for the month this morning produced 749^ozs gold, which on melting was reduced to 7420zs 4iwts. The amount j)f_quartz put through was lewt. of picked stone and between 6C3 and 700 loads of general dirt, most of the latter being from the stopeson No. 1 reef above Nos. 3 and 4 levels. The return is an excellent one, and shows that the general < dirt is of steady payable grade. MOANATAIRI. During the past month 72 tons of general dirt, chiefly from the stopes on No. 9 reef, have been treated. This, with 1201bs of picked stone and specimens, gave the-good payable return of 1770zs 4dwts retorted gold. DART. Cleaning up took place this morning for the payable yield of 2160zs 3dwts melted gold, the result of 3^ weeks' crushing, " the battery haviDg lost the remaining three days through the in* specter's visit. The quantity of dirt treated was about 190 loads general dirt and 401bs picked stone, so the average yield is over an ounce per load. The bulk of the crushing came from the stopes on No. 2 reef, No. 3 level, where the'lode continues to look about the same. In the western drive, a further improvement is noticeable; the quartz is 20 inches wide, carrying favorable mineral, and showed colors of gold at last breaking. The Alfred lead is being driven on at No. 2 level; it is in rather tight country at present and has not shown gold. BRIGHT SMILE. In sinking the new winze below the Multum-in-Parvo level, the leader keeps about six inches in thickness, and at last breaking down showed colors of gold pretty freely. The sandstone also continues favorable, GOLD RETURNS. AlbtTENiA.—McDonald and party have crushed 8 loads of quartz for 7ozs lSdwts melted gold. ; Moanataibi.—Christie and party this afternoon lodged 2&0Z3 lldsvts retorted Sold- ___________
