Licensing Meetings.

The first meetings of the recently elected Licensing committees' were called for to-day, but in only two cases did a quorum put in an appearance. HASTINGS COMMITTEE. Messrs E. McDonnell, M. Casey, and W. Fricker attended, and the only business before the meeting being the election of a Chairman, Mr McDonnell was chosen, and an adjournment took place. THAMES SOUTH. Messrs Farrell, Fricker, and Butler were present, and Mr Farrell was elected chairman. The only business to be dealt with was the application of Mr J. Ren nick to remove the license of the Imperial Hotel, Pollen street, from his present premises to a house to be placed on a section on the opposite side of the street. Mr Miller was present in support of the application, and Mr Lush appeared ! on behalf of Mr Wyiie, a neighbor, to oppose the removal; but Mr Miller contended that Mr Lush had no right to interfere, as the Act only provided for personal objections being made. The Committee agreed with this view, and Mr Speight, one of the objectors, appeared, and held that the Licensing Committee had no power to grant the application under the Act, and after a lengthy state* ment on behalf of his view of the ease, Mr ISTodder objected to the application being granted. Mr Miller pointed out that aone of the objections offered

justified the provisions of the Act being used to prevent the application being granted; he asked the Committee to adjourn the application for a month, so that it might see that the promised improved accommodation would be provided, and to promise that if such were carried out, the application for the removal of the license would be granted. The opponents of the license had used Mr Wylie's name as an objector, yet Mr Wylie had signed an approval of the application. In reply to a Commissioner, Mr Miller said he thought the removal of the house could be managed in two days. The Committee decided to grant the application for a removal of the license, at a meeting to be held four weeks hence, such granting to be subject to the work of removal being satisfactorily performed.
