The following encouraging telegram was posted at tho Corner this afternoon, being a copy of one despatched by the manager of the Deep Level Cross:—" Leader cot, low lovelj gold seen in stone.—J. Stodaet." The gool news had, however, got abroad before the receipt of thiii, "and shares had advanced to 3s 4d ( the list closing with sellers at 3a 6d. Imperials were also firmer from the same cause.
Tee lovers of music are promised a treat on Saturday night at tba Academy o( Music, when the Vesta Amor Company will present Offenbach's operetta of "The Lily of Normandy." Of Miss Amor's capabilities as a vocalist, the Press generally is unanimous in extolling ber praise*. The Company consists of Mr Arthur Lissant, the well-known baritone of Simonsen's Opera Company, tho tenor h Mr Hubert Towaey, who i« new to in, but if report speaks right he will establish himself as a farorite. The comedian of the company is our old friend Barry O'N oil.
The committee appointed io draw up a programme fox tho repatta ~on "STt. Patrick* Day met last iiigh% and decided o\ the following list of events, entries for which will be received up to 8 p.m. on the 15th of March : —Gutter race, Ist class yachts, 4 to 7 tons, 2nd do. under 4 tons, open sailing boats, whale boat pulling race, pair oars do., eoulling (single) do., Maori wlialeboats da , dingy race, and a bull punt race. The full programme will be advertised on Saturday. The list ia a good" one, and a capital dny's amusement may be looked forward to if the weathnr proves favorable.
A meeting of promoters of the propo.ssd Leather and Boot Factory Compnny was held in the Borough Chambers last evening, Mr M. Whitehead presiding. The committee which had been appointed afc b previous meeting brought up their report, and tho following resolutions were carried :—" That a company be formed to carry on Ibo business of a tannery and boot factory."—Proposed by Mr Hickey, and seconded by Mr Bennett, " That a committee roniuting of His Worship the Mayor, Mefgrs Dean, Whitehead, Fricker, S. 0. Macky, W. Murdoch, J. McGowan, J. Frater, W. Lawrie, and M. C. Hiokey be appointed to draw up a prospectus of the proposed company, for submission et a future meeting.''— Resolved that a meeting to receive the report be held at the same time end piece on Tueeday, the 11th March.
An order was granted to-day by the Resident Magistr td, prohibiting all hotelkeepera in the Borough and Couaty supplying Mary Wifrbftm with liquor,
The Assessment Court, in relation to the Borough roll of ratepayers, will be held to" tiiori'jw at noon; a large number of objections bare been lodged.

Two accidents occurred yesterday afternoon, though fortunately neither of them ended seriously. A boy named Artha, while playing leap-frog at the Kauaersnga School, fell and broke his arm, which was afterwards set at the Hospital. James Hicks, a carte:', was engaged near the Dart battery, Haps Creek, and while guiding a f;ara of horses along the road, one of the leader's chains snapped. This caused the ho«e to slew round, pushing him over a high bank, just below the mill, end rolling over him. He fell on to a number of boulders, and was severely bruised on the right side, though fortunately no bones were broken. How he escaped being crushed to death is a mystery. He managed with great difficulty to walk to the Hospital, and a few -days' rest will probably set him right again.
Wb have been requested to correct a statement made by our contemporary this morning to the effect that a man, suffering from severe injuries received in the Eauaeranga bush, wt3 admitted into the Hospital yesterday. The facts of the case are that a man named Algie, who is liable to filß, had two in his whare at the bush, and his mates, being unable to do any* thing for him, carried him in to the Hospital.
In tbo Police Court this morning a dusky son of Columbia was charged with having b? n drunk'and diiotderly; that he was druuk wai denied, and the decision of the Bench was in favor of the accused ; but the charge of using language not calculat d to delight ears polite, caused the Bench to record twenty shillings or three days.
Thk District Hospital is now quite full' every bed being occupied, and an extra shake-down had to be provided for a man admitted yerterday. The state for tho week ending the 24th instant is as follows :-— Remained, 21; admitted, 1; discharged, 1; died, 1 ; remaining (males) 20. Three patients have since been admutad.
A Weijington man named Wattar Gh Smith, for many years chief clerk in the Gas Company's office, obtained leave of absence for a few days, but it now appears that in company with a bairn.id he was about to take a trip to Australia. His wife, having got news of this, laid an information charging him with deserting her and their three ohildren, and he has been arrested at the Bluff, end remanded to Wellington.
A.meeting of the Thames Branch of the Irish National League is convened for to* morrow evening, at the Hibernian Hall, Bboitland, at -which all interested are re* quested to attend.
A vbet absurd appeal to the Bench was made in the Police Court this morning. A boj named Robin ion had, it appeared, thrown a stone which struck the foot of a boy named Payne, and the parents having waxed ■" exceeding wroth," rushed into Court. The R.M. delivered some very sensible advice to both parties re interference in children's quarrels, and after commenting on the trivial nature of the charge, said he would inflict no fine, but order the defendant to pay the costs of the Court, which amounted to 7s.
Br advertisements appearing in another column the Licensing Committees of Thames North and South are called together for the despatch of business on Saturday, tho former at noon, and the latter at 12.15 p.m.
The Government have re. ived a telegram from the R.M. at Hokianga to the effect that a few cases of'low fever exist at Herekiago ; two have ended fatally. There is vety* little more sickness than in former years at tiiii s«nson. As long 1 9 they live on the low lands it must continue. Typhoid fever is not prevalent, aa stated.
The religious instruction classes at tbe Dunedin State schools, started some months ngo by tho city clergy, are still oarried on, but the attendances since the vacation have not been large, and it is admitted the movement is a failure. A meeting of clergy will be held shortly to consider the question of stopping the classes.
