THE AUSTRALIAN CHILD.
Heir of all the ages! Child of hopes and fears! Who shall read the pages Of thy coming years ? ' What prophetic sages Count thy smiles or tears?
Blossoms richer, whiter,
Round thy homesteads lieSouthern air is lighter, - Purer is thy shy, ' Sunbeams sweeter, brighter, • Greet thee from onhigh.
Saxon strength is in theej Mixed with Celtic fire— Shrewdness, too, within thea Caught from Scottish sireWill the union win thee Still to something higher ?
Let the fruit of science, Kn&wledge widely spread, Skill that bids defiance To the wants men dread, Teach the self-reliance, Not make vain thy head.
Make thy land a Goshen, - Mart for many an isle Scattered o'er the ocean, Plenty's chosen soil, Full of woman's devotion, Blessed with manly toil.
Seizing great occasions, Let self-worship cease— Showing to the nations, With each year's increase, Self-control and patience, Self-respect and peace.
In the grand " Dominion," Eound thee soon to start, In the Austral Union Bearing well thy part, Shape the world's opinion, Mould the whole world's heart!
