DEEP LEVEL CROSS.
The timbering up of the long winze between No. 5 and the 640 ft level is progressing satisfactorily, and in about a week's time the manager will be able to start opening out the intermediate level, which will be entered about 70ft. below No. 5. All the dirt from here will be hauled up the Big Pump shaft, but that from above the No. 5 will be taken to the surface in the usual way. The- road in the 640 ft. south crosscut is being re-laid;
KCKANUI HILL.
Eetorting took place to»day but the return is a poor one—l36zs melted gold. The dirt was taken from the three lodes in hand at the tunnel lerel, Kelly's section. Last crushing it averaged 15dwts, but this time, though from a stope above, and an underhand stope below the level, it is very poor. The manager is now rising on the tributers' lead, in order to get through its junction with the large crosslode, and see what it is worth on the hangingwall, where better dirt should be found.
BRIGHT SMILE.
The manager has abandoned the winze commenced by him a short time ago, and has started another further eastward. The lode has been broken down once here; it is a strong body of quartz, and showed cold, a few specimens being picked out. The contractors for driving the low level from the Extended tunnel having thrown up the contract, no work is being done here for the present. Should the main lode be found to carry through payable to the western side of the slide, where the manager is now prospecting for it, he will probably be able to drive in on this from the surface instead of continuing the Extended level, where the country is tight at present. DAET.
A further improvement is noticeable in the western drive on No. 2 reef at No. 3 level. In breaking down last night it was found that the lode, which for some feet has been merely a formation, had opened out to a width of 18 inches, and was a good strong lode. The country is an excellent class of sandstone, and the quartz contains all the good minerals which were formerly so the manager has no doubt he will have payable ground here. The face is now in about 90ft past No. 2 winze, and in the leading stope the reef keeps more solid
than it did ia the level. The batterywill, be stepped for two days next week on account of the boiler inspector's visit. Cleaning up for the month takes place next Saturday.
MOANATAIRI EXTENDED.
Shareholders in this claim will no doubt be glad to hear that the machinery for the pumping and winding gear is now on the_ way from England, and there is a reason^ able prospect of work below being resumed before many months are past. It will be remembered that a 'favorable class of country for gold was penetrated in the shaft just before the men were driven out by water. - - ,-.-.,,..,■-■. GOLD RETURNS.
