Ohinbmttbi is about to indulge in an election of Licensing Commissioners. The nomination of candidates for positions on the Licensing Committee resulted in, we are informed, the selection of Messrs P. Austin, J. Cock, J. Goonan, F. Lipsey, 0. F. Mitchell, A. McLoughrey, A. J. Thorpe, and H. 0. Wick. The polling takes place on tbe 29th iost.

The ketch Wild Duck, of about 4.0 torn, well known in shipping circles, has been purchased by four Thames gentlemen, Messrs S. Roe, late of the Despatch, J. Clark, Gibbons, and another, for the sum of £450, and they intend to get a captain for her, and then take a cruise.to the Islands. They propose to visit New Guinea, and to enter the pearl trade in that locality, but the arrangements are not d- finitely settled. The Wild Duck is, we understand, to be brought to the Thames and fitted up for the voyage. We wish our townsfolk success in the venture.

Thh parades of the Naval _Artillery and Thames Rifla Rangers were held in their respective drill halls last evening, Major Shepherd being inspecting officer, TheNavals mustered 34 rank and file, 2 first class petty officers, 1 chief petty officer, and 1 captain, total 38 without the band. Major Shepherd expreised his satisfaction at the number present and their general appearance and proficiency in drill. The parade frill be registered as a daylight one, only the bad weather preventing it taking place in the open air. The Rifle Rangers were not so foviunufce in their tow. ter, only 35 rolling up, 2 less than the required number for the parade to count. The Major commented on the small attendance. At the conclusion of the parade of each company he hoped that the men who were to take part in the prize firing in Auakland shortly wonld keep up the reputation of their district.

A Sobatch cricket match will be played on the Waio-Karakft Flat to-morrow Bfternoon.

Thi Thames district will send 25 men to* the Bine Association meeting in Auckland next month. The Bifla Bangers team will consist of the men mentioned in laßt night's issue rod Volb. W. Climo, A. Newdick, A; Thomaß, and W. J. Paterson. Thoeo from the Naval Artillery number 11, viz., Gunner* P. Weir, H. Brownlee, $. Brownlee, E. Brownlow, B. Oartwrjight, B. Lukey, J, Cameron, J. Floyd, W. Dare, T. Johns, and Bandsman Gill. Further entries will be received up to to-morrow afternoon. Thb Volunteer case Millet v. Smart concluded just as we were going to press, when the plaintiff wa3 nonsuited on the ground that the assets of the company had not been realised. The bench held that the pi an tiff was still a member of the company.

Tot Auckland Harbor Board has appointed Mr William Errington, 0. E, Calliope Dock engineer.

We notice that Mr J. E. Hansen, the popular grocer, of Shqrtland, has, notwithstanding the cry of dull times, found his shop too small, and has doubled its size by adding the premises formerly occupied by Mr J. Grant, baker. The alterations are now nearly complete, and' will make a fine roomy store. Mr Hansen, at any rate, appears to hare faith in the future of the Thames.

The third and final competition for the prizes preesnted to the Rifle Rangers takeß place to-morrow.

Me W. Gatbeket's little screw steamer is now very nearly fitted up, and she will be launched from the reclamation, Richmond street, either on Tuesday or Wednesday morn* ing next. The R.M.s Court assumed quite a warlike appearance to-day, nearly all the Volunteer officers in the district being present as witnesses or spectators. *■" We hare been requested to state that Miss Cocks, who sang "Dreaming of home and mother," at the Catholic concert on Wednesday night, is only 9 years old, not about 11, as mentioned in last night's iwue.

We regret to learn that another local manufactory is about to be removed from the Thames. Messrs Weat Bros., who have for more than two years'! P&et been carrying on the chairmaking and turning trade at Shortland, have decided to remove to Helensville, where better facilities are obtainable for carrying on the trade. They will take their machinery with them.

At the conclusion of the lecture in the Oddfellows' Hall last night, Mr E. H. Taylor was presented with a purse of sovereigns, subscribed by his congregation, as a recognition of his services during the past eighteen months.

At the Dunedin Education Board yesterday there was a personal altercation between Mr McKenzie, M.H.8., and Mr Elder. Mr Elder said, in reference to an accusation of personal motives, " All I can do is to give you the lie direct," to which Mr McKenzie replied " And I give you the lie direct; if you would not be a low, mean skunk you would not say such a thing."

Mr Liabdet, fishmonger, of Wellington, has placed in the market a large quantity of frozen fish, hares, and poultry, brought out from England by the British Queen. The fish comprise plaice, whiting, and sod. The prices reelised were, for whiting, Is each j and moderate sized cod 7s 6d. The poultry was got rid of at a fair price. They all appeared in fine condition.

Axbeet Kabaitiana, the nine-year-old son of the late Earaitiana Tokomoana, will be one of the richest land-owners in the colony. Not half of the lad's interests in land have been individualised, and he is now in receipt of £15,000 per annum. His landed property, when it has all passed into the hands of bis trustee, will be good value for half a million of money.—Exchange.

At the December pupil teachers' examinations for Canterbury of 161 who sent in their names 160 attended. Of 51 examined for the first year, 50 passed. Of 40 for the second second year, 37 passed. Of 34- for the third, 31 passed. Of 31 for the fourth, 26 prised.
