Dunedin Races. Dunedin, Yesterday. THE BACE FOR THE CUP.

All the eleven acceptors saddled forihe Dunedia Cup, over which there was a deal of speculation. There were several false starts, in each of which NonseDse got away and went some distance. Eventually a good start was effected, Digby Grand catting out the running, which was in clusters, except Nonsense, who was lying last at the far side of the course. Sou'wester, who was occupying a prominent position, somehow got into a ditch, and apparently lost all chance in the race. The field then opened out, and Bobinson's pair darted to the front; both were in the van passing the stand the second time, but Lady Emma, who had been in good position "throughout, now made her effort, and, challenging the leaders, soon had Nonsense done with. Vanguard and the Otago mare raced along the back stretch of the course, but going welt she soon led, and separating herself by three lengths from Vanguard, a deafening cry proclaimed the victory of the Cup winner of 1884. Once in the straight it was evident that the race was at an end ; July, who came strongly at the finish, was second, Sou'wester a good third, and Hazard fourth. Neither Poet nor Hiopodamia were really dangerous. McLean's victory was highly popular, and Cotton also re ceived an ovation on his second victory. He is the best Southern Jockey over the sticks we have, but hundreds would not entertain the idea of his being* able to ride in a flat race. The totalisator dividend outside was £5, inside (two tickets) £15. The betting at the post was 2 to 1 against Sou'wester, 3 to 1 Nonsense, 5 to 1 Lady Emma, 100 to 10 to 5 the rest. The way Sou'wester came on at the finish shows that had it not boon for his accident, the race would have. been a moral for him; his stable regard it as so. Selling BACE.^-Trumpeter 1, Don Jose 2. Seven horses ran. The dividend on the totalisator was £114s.

Publican's Handicap. — Taiaroa 1. Eubina, Salvage, and The Jilt also ran. The Jilt bolted three times round before the start. Taiaroa led from the start to the finish. Time, 2mins 15secs. ->

Maidex Plate. — Miss Griffiths I, Hulderness 2. Toko, Coupon, Waeea, Vairo, and Youth also ran. Holderness was a warm favourite. Miss -Griffiths won easily. Of £646 in the totalisator, only £14 was on the winner.

Stewards' Purse Welter Handicap. —Sou'wester 1, Taiaroa 2, Minerva, 3. Master Agnes went out, but bolted twice round, and was brought in again. Sou'wester won as he liked by half a length. Time lmin 33secs.

The Hack Eace concluded the day's proceedings.

RACE CotXBSE, DtfNEDIN, This day. The weather to-day was really glorious, and the attendance, for a second day, was large. The proceedings opened with the Tally-ho Handicap, of 80sovs, 1 mile . and a half. Hercules (list 121b) ... 1 Little John (lOst) 2 Kareara (9st 51bs) 3 Rocket also started. The betting was 7 to 4 against Hercules, 2 tolKareara, and 3to 2 the others. All four acceptors faced the starter, and Eareara darted off with the lead, but was soon pulled back, allowing Little John and Rocket to cut out the running. On passing the stand all four were well together, and jumping beautifully, Rocket gaining considerably at each hurdle. At the far side of the course Hercules was taken to the front, and made the pace a cracker; on entering the straight he was three lengths ahead, but the others were coming well under the whip. A pretty fight resulted in favor of Hercules by three lengths, Little John beating Kareara by a head for second place. Time, 3mins. llsecs. Not a single mistake was made, and all the horses were run. clean out. i

Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. . Lady Emma ... 1 "Vanguard ... 2 Hippodamia ... $ Salvage, Thenge, and Sou'wester also ran. Betting: Level money on Sou'wester. It was soon evident that the Otago mare had plenty in hand, and coming away won by fully a length, Sou'wester fourth. It is generally admitted that the race was one of the prettiest ever seen on the 'Forbury course. Time, 3 mins. lOsecs. £2124 on the totalisator; 358 on the winner, Cur Stakes Handicap of Ssovs, with 200sovs added, for three-year olds; five furlongs. Watersprite Colt ... ... 1 Lady Evelyn.,. ... .. 2 Wave Filly ... v ..> ... 3 Escatos was scratched. Time, lmin fsecs. Dividend, £B 16s 6d. £10,831 were put through the totalisator yesterday.
