The meeting has opened most auspiciously. The weather was very threatening in the morning, but the heavy clouds gradually cleared away, and by the time the rac'ng commenced it was R-magnifi-c?nt day, without a breath of wind. The ground is in splendid order, and the r:noyation of the buildings gires everything a smart appearance. Trains and trams conveyed people to the course in hundreds, so that when thi£ ball operand there must have been about 600 D present. Hurdle Race. For tlse Hurdle Race, Little John, Rocket, and Double Event came out, the other four horses being scratched. Rocket was the favorite, but Little John had large support on the tot.i.'.lisalor. It was admitted the race lay between these two, as Hercules' crushing weight' gave him no chance. A capital start was effected: Rocket, and Little John raced all the distanc almost side by side, the grey always keeping a decided lead, and clearing his jamps with greater ease than the other. At the final jump the grey ran away from John, and came in the easiest of winners. The others did not persevere. Time, 3.38. Totalisator dividend, £2 10s. Champagne Stakes. Iv the Champagne Stakes the starters were Lady Evelyn, Wave (filly), and Watersprite (colt). McLean's filly was ridden by Jas- Cotton, and jumped oflf with the lead, which she maintained till
the finish, though in the run home she was gamely challenged by the Watersprite olfc, ridden by Derrit, but the latter could never pet on terms with Evelyn. Three fo one were on the winner. Time, lmin 20seca. Dividend, £17s6d. 2.40 p.m. DXTNEDIIT CUP. The whole eleven of the final acceptors started. Sou'wester was a hot favorite, Nonsense being next in demand. Sou'wester must have won if he had not fallen into a rut at the back of the course. The result wa-— Lady Emma ... ... ... 1 July ... 2 Sou'wester 3 Time. 3minss6secs. Totalisaf^r, £15.
Wellington, This day. A meeting of the Wellington Eacing Club was held last night, when the Secretary brought up the balance sheet, which showed the receipts to have been £2131 19s 9d, and the expenditure £1779 19s 4d; balance i.i bank, £35119s sd; unpaid entries and other c?sh assets, £112 6s; outstanding liabilities up to date, £265 2s lid. A balance of nearly £200 will be left to the credit of Me Club , after settling up these liabilities. Mr J. B. George congratulate! the Club on itn financial condition, and general regret was expressed at the retirement of Mv Lyon, -ton., sec, owing to business engagements. It was resolved to present him with a gold chronometer. A vote of thanks in appreciation of his services was accorded to Mr Evitt, hr.ndicapper.
